Fresh Heart Publishing is going from strength to strength...
Various other titles are being prepared:
Preparing for a Healthy Birth (the American edition of
Birth: Countdown to Optimal)
This should be out by the end of July (2009!). We're slow because we're doing
everything possible to make each book as good as possible... Apologies to
anyone's who's been waiting. The American edition will be in a standard American
paperback size, it will naturally include only issues relating to the USA,
photos have been changed - and all the necessary language tweaks have hopefully
been made. Did you know that Americans talk about 'prenatal classes', not
'antenatal ones' and that Demerol is the American equivalent of pethidine? (In
fact it's the same drug simply marketed differently.) And did you know that Americans don't talk about electric 'fires' (they're 'heaters') and - apparently! - they never say 'straight away'. We live and learn...
Preparing for a Normal Birth (the new UK title for the book which was originally called BIRTH: Countdown to Optimal
It was eventually decided that the original title probably sounds too technical for most pregnant women so a new
title has been developed and will be used for this second edition. Nevertheless,
the original edition (with the technical-sounding title!) has been selling very
well and we've received some excellent, very effusive feedback - as well as one
review by a reviewer who clearly didn't like anything about it at all! It's
interesting that some books provoke an extreme reaction, either way. In any
case, the general response has been overwhelmingly good. The new title will
appear some time in 2009.
Promoting Normal Birth: Research, Reflections & Guidelines (which was originally called Optimal Birth: The What, The Why & The How)
The second edition of the original book is now in development and will be quite different from the original - not in character, perhaps, but in terms of organization of material and length, etc - because we've received many requests to add various sections. Again, the title will
be changed for various reasons. The second edition will take into account all
the feedback received in the extensive consultation exercise which took place
over the last few months. Comments and encouragement came in from heads of
midwifery, consultant midwives, lecturers in midwifery and 100 student midwives
who received copies of the book as they registered at the RCM's student
midwives' conference in November last year. Overall, feedback was very positive
and helpful. Anybody who would still like to email comments on the original book (if they haven't yet
had time) should email them to
feedback@freshheartpublishing.co.uk We're hoping the new edition will be
ready by the middle of 2010.
10 Steps to Better Birth
In case you're wondering about this title, yes, you do remember correctly... It
was originally on the Fresh Heart Publishing homepage, but has temporarily been
taken off. This book will be a summary of advice for care providers in
developing countries. Of course, many materials exist already (and we have
copies of most of them on our shelves at Fresh Heart!) but the idea is to
produce a manual which will be more accessible and which will incorporate the
experience and suggestions from many midwives, obstetricians and lecturers. If
you would like to participate in developing this project in any way (by writing
material, donating photos or even money) please email
